The dangers of a 24/7 platform

Liam Stacey

The student who mocked the football player Muama was recently sent to jail for 56 days after posting on twitter "LOL (laugh out loud). F*** Muamba. He's dead!!! #haha." This shows the danger of social media and its 24/7 effects. The fast pace of the tweet caused anger and ended up with a jail sentence.

Social media, is it a good or bad thing? Should we just go back to good old fashioned print? The dangers of social media are strong, a tweet can be seen worldwide and within seconds of it being posted... it can cause a lot of harm to ones reputation, as I'm almost certain this student will now find out. From personal experience I can find out things that have happened all over the world before its even on the news! How are we ever going to keep up in this society? Preferably with a treadmill!

PR... is it just women sitting at a desk?

McDonald's new TV ad stars the PR department of a business. Unfortunately its not quite the representation we fellow PR's deserve. It shows a group of women just sitting around a desk in an office.

Is it true that people still have that idea of PR? If so, what can be done about it? PR seems to work in the shadows and never really gets any credit for all the hard work. Whereas marketing gets all the merits! We need to get the message out that PR is more than just writing a press release and making some phone calls. PR can often be one of the most crucial aspects in an organisation, although it still seems like people do not realise.

Moss at Mango

It definitely seems like the 'in' thing to do at the moment, team up with high street stores. Kate Moss has recently collaborated with Mango, proving very successful. As the new face of Mango Moss is appearing by herself in a range of new ads.

Poor Kate though, looking around at other articles on the new ads all people can do is post negative comments about her past activities. Is it right that people should still judge her on past activities? Was the PR inadequate to keep her reputation above the rest?

Float or sink?

Everyone's raving about the new release of Titanic 3D... or are they? Is it going to smash box office charts or flop? As a personal favourite I can't wait but I've heard many people saying negative things about paying to see a film they've already seen. Is there anything wrong with re releasing classics in 3D? I wouldn't be surprised if all films were released in 3D in the future, so is this a bad thing?

For a re release of a film I haven't come across a lot of marketing for the film. Are they trying to keep it low key or have I just been living under a rock for the past 2 months?

Kony 2012 seems to be a bit like marmite

Everyones seen the video, everyones shared a little tear.... but have they really reached their initial goal? Yes the video has gone viral and been a HUGEEEE success, but has this actually helped towards the overall objectives of the team?

I can't help but think it may all be a little pointless... yes I know, controversial. After watching the video a number of times there is no real clear cut aims or objectives. I'm not sure how getting everyone together on April the 20th is going to stop Kony? Surely they need America and Africa on their side?

Even though their objectives may not be clear, no one can say that the video isn't moving, the use of shock tactics and appeal to emotions is brilliant. It just goes to show that even a simple old video can create a great awareness and affect on people.

Pink friday

MAC Nicki Minaj Pink 4 Friday Lipstick

MAC Nicki Minaj Pink 4 Friday Lipstick

M.a.c collaborated with Nikki Minaj to release new products. One being the limited collection lipstick, named Pink Friday. Pretty much a rename of the already in store 'pink nouveau.' The lipstick was promoted throughout stores and on-line. Nikki was also photographed wearing the lipstick. Seems the public couldn't get enough of it and it sold out in stores all over the world and on-line within hours of becoming available to the public! There were also bids of E bay up to £100 for the lipstick alone!

Is it the marketing or channels of communication used to add to the success or was it just down to the celebrity? Would this lipstick have sold out so fast if it had of been someone else promoting it? Do we live in a celebrity obsessed world or do we all just love a bit of pink lipstick!

Golden Balls *cough cough*

David Beckham's showing off his underwear again... His new collection at H and M consist of underwear retailing from just £9.99! The images were released earlier on this year showing a moody and mean looking David Beckham.

The bulge is back: David Beckham models his new underwear range for H&M

With many more half naked pictures of the sexy footballer, it will no doubt have women flocking into stores buying their partners the underwear in the hopes that they will turn into David! After spending a lot of time working with Armani for underwear is this a drop down for David Beckham? Or is it him trying to be 'down to earth?'
